Can We Bring Them Back

2023

I have always been particularly moved when I’ve happened across a dead animal. In the city, birds are the most common. They spend most of their time in open air, unrestricted. Rats you find less often. As a child, I cried each time I saw a finch sprawled out in a field and prayed to God that the bird would stand back up and fly away. I still feel that way. Other kids on the playground were disgusted by their small corpses, as if the deaths of these foreign species differed entirely from our pets or our own as people.
